Can Curt TruTrack Be Used on 2004 ATC Trailer That Can't Use Weight Distribution

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 05/20/2025

Question:

2004 ATC 20foot inclosed aluminum trailer towing with 25 Chevy Silverado ========================================================== Called ATC and their response was We dont recommend WD hitches for alu trailers, check with your dealer. Can this hitch be used with the ATC? The frame rails are 2.5inch x 5inch and ~4foot long trailer to coupler. Trailer GVWR is 7,700lbs - I usually tow combined trailer+cargo in trailer 6,000lbs plus ~600lbs combined weight in cabin+bed. Chevy is rated at 9,900lbs towing. Question: - Can I use this with the trailer as is? - Does the steel bracket on the alu frame rails cause corrosion or need something inbetween? - Are there sleeves available to distribute the load on the frame rail itself? Thanks for your advice - would like to go with the CURT 17500 if possible. Tom

Hi Tom; the trailer manufacturer has the final word on weight distribution hitches. Since they say they don't recommend it you do not want to use the Curt TruTrack # C17500 or any other WDH with your trailer. What kind of issues are you experiencing while towing? If the trailer is causing the back end of your truck to squat I recommend adding SumoSprings # SS45FR or even air bags like # PB32ZV. If your main concern is trailer sway you can use the Curt True Course # C94VV for sway control.

Hi Tom, did you have a chance to try the SumoSprings or air bags to address the squatting issue with your truck? I’d love to hear how it worked out, as it could help others facing similar towing challenges.

@RobinH Thanks for the follow up. I went the weight distribution/anti sway bar route and all good now. Also installed Bilstein shocks for better damping over Rancho
