Hello Z,

You can definitely haul two 9-foot surfboards in bags standing upright using the Thule Compass # TH890000 in post-style mode. That setup's perfect for keeping your boards vertical and snug while still leaving room on the roof for your Thule cargo box, like a Force or Motion series. The Compass only takes up about a foot of crossbar space when it's in vertical mode, so as long as your crossbars are wide enough (like 53 inches or more) you should be golden. Just slap the Compass on one side, mount the box next to it, and you’re set for a surf trip with all your gear.

Just make sure your boards don’t block the cargo box from opening, especially if it opens on the same side as the Compass. And watch that total roof load so you’re not stressing your racks or your ride. Bow and stern tie-downs? Definitely a good call if you're cruising the highway, keeps everything tight even when you're catching wind (tie-downs are included with the # TH890000 ). Oh, and throw some padding between the board bags if they're rubbing, just to keep 'em fresh.

So where are you headed with all your gear?

Hey Z, did the Thule Compass work out for your surfboards and cargo box setup? I'd love to hear how it all fit together, as your experience could help others planning a similar trip.
