Most Affordable AC System to Install in a Utility Trailer
Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 04/08/2025 >
Question:
I have an 8.5x16 enclosed trailer. I just need AC. What is the best bang for the buck rooftop unit to install and what size generator should I be looking to get to power it, a refrigerator and probably an air compressor as well?

Hey Corey! The most affordable option that's going to do a good job of cooling down your utility trailer is the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System item # ACM135BC. This system comes with a 13,500 btu AC unit, a distribution box that controls it, and a wiring harness with mounting hardware.
Please note you may need to reinforce your trailer's roof. This set up is designed to fit roofs 2-1/2" to 5" thick. I attached a screenshot from the instructions that'll show what you need to do.
You're going to need a pretty big generator like our Firman 10,000-Watt Portable Generator item # 333-H08051. I have linked a faq article below on picking out generators. It covers the math you'll need to do to select the correct one.

Hey Corey, how did the Advent Air system work out for cooling your enclosed trailer? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance cooling power with generator size.
