E-Bike Rack Recommendation that Could Possibly Carry an 85 lb Bike

Updated 03/05/2025 | Published 03/02/2025

Question:

Please help me choose a bike rack. Being from Missouri, I’d prefer to give you my business than anyone else! I currently live in Oregon. I have a Toyota Tacoma with an Alu-Cab Canopy Camper. I need a swing away bike rack for 2 or 3 bikes. My regular bike and my sister’s 85lb e-bike or for another occasion, 3 regular bikes. We can probably get to Wentzville in April with the heavy bikes if that would be significantly cheaper and/or convenient. Thoughts? Dixie

Hey Dixie! Thanks for the kind words from a fellow Missourian! So your situation is kind of tough for a single bike rack solution as we technically do not have a bike rack that can carry an 85 lb bike at this time. The highest rated option is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider part # HLY84FR which has an 80 lb per bike rating. So this could work with your 85 lb e-bike only if you took the battery out and it weighed more than 5 lb. There isn't a swing away option for this rack either.

Does having a second swing away 3-bike rack work possibly? The only thing I can think of to cover both scenarios is two different racks.

Thank you for responding! Which swing away bike rack has the heaviest rating? You’re right, taking the battery off helps a lot. Now my sister now thinks it’s “only” 62 pounds without the battery. My bike is about 20 pounds. The rack has to be a swing away so we can access the door to our sleeping area. If it came to it, my bike could go inside for the trip with my sister so a 62+ pound rating could work. Thanks, again. Dixie

@Dixie So we have two platform racks that are pretty close to what you are looking for with the RockyMounts Backstage part # RKY10002 and the RockyMounts AfterParty # RKY37ZR. These are both platform 2-bike racks that have ability to swing away and they have a 60 lb per bike capacity. While I can't ever say it's okay to exceed the bike rack capacity I can say this would probably work just fine for you.
