Can Steel Powder Coated Wheels Be Used On A Boat Trailer?

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/01/2025

Question:

I want to purchase the tire and rim combo AM35354. Nowhere in the description of this wheel does it say suitable for boat trailer use. Just wanted to confirm this would work for this application. Also, I currently have 4.80-12 tires on my ez loader trailer and want to know your opinion to purchase this product for upgrade to what I have now. Do you think this size will work without any issues to my current set up like rubbing etc.

Hey Neil, thanks for reaching out. The tire and rim combo # AM35354 is a steel powder coated wheel. It can be used on a boat trailer, but generally we recommend going with either a galvanized or aluminum wheel for boat trailers. The powder coating is durable, but in marine environments, it can and likely will succumb to rust eventually. Galvanized or aluminum wheels are not going to rust, which is why they are more suited for being submerged.

If your trailer is only submerged twice a year, or only in fresh water, you can probably get away with the powder coat. If you are in and out of the water a lot, or in salt water, do a galvanized wheel like part # AM31202.

As far as the larger tires fitting your trailer, I do suggest that you measure to be sure. The 4.80-12 tires are 4.9" wide and 20.7" in diameter roughly. The 145/80-12 tires are 5.7" wide and 21.3" in diameter.

Ideally, you want to have at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. So, the 145/80-12 tires are not that much bigger than what you have now, but please check and make sure you will have adequate space.

Hey Neil, did you get a chance to check the clearances on your EZ Loader trailer for the 145/80-12 tires? I'm curious if the extra width and height worked out without any rubbing. Your update could help others thinking about a similar upgrade.
