Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 6,700 lb GVWR Trailer
Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/17/2025 >
Question:
I just got trailer 525 hitch 5035 dry 6700 GVW. Dont have truck yet, planning on 3/4 ton. Seems most of the distribution hitchs are for heavier rigs. Recommendations, do I need one, can you install just an anti sway mechanism?

Hey Toby, great questions!
It's recommended to use a weight distribution hitch (WDH) whenever the trailer will weigh at least half the weight of the tow vehicle. With a GVW of 6,700 lbs you'll definitely want to use a WDH to give you the best control and a safer ride quality.
For your trailer you'll want to use something with a max tongue weight of 1,000 lbs, and for that I recommend the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU77FR. A common misconception is that you base the WDH rating off of the max weight of the trailer, but you actually are supposed to base it off of the max loaded tongue weight which is why this looks like it might be heavier than what you initially need.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey Toby, how did things work out with the Blue Ox TrackPro for your trailer setup? Did the ride feel more stable once you added the weight distribution hitch? Your update could make it easier for others towing similar loads.
