Question:
I’m trying to help a friend move a big boat from Arizona to Louisiana. Boat itself weighs about 10,000 lbs plus the triaxle trailer. Not sure what trailer weighs but guessing it’s well under 3000 lbs. He has a 2008 Silverado 3500 HD Duramax, 4x4, dually. The hitch says it’s capable of towing 13,000 lbs with a weight distributing setup and would give it a tongue weight capacity of 1500 lbs. Do you have a weight distribution setup for a boat that would work for this application?

Hello David, thanks for getting in touch. We do have a weight distribution system that will work for this. What I recommend is the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ64FR. This WD system has a max capacity of 16,000 lbs and it sounds like you will be just under this. For this system to be effective you want the trailer tongue weight to be between 1,200 and 1,600 lbs. With the 10,000 lb boat and <3,000 lb trailer, your tongue weight should be right within that range.
Please note, this # EQ64FR WD system is intended for a 2-1/2" hitch receiver. If your truck has a 2" hitch, you will need to order part # C85NR as well.
Also, the frame brackets for this WD hitch must be placed between 27" and 32" back from the center of the hitch ball. Please measure the A-frame on your trailer and make sure you will have room for the frame brackets. They are about 2" wide.
These Equalizer systems are great at controlling sway and leveling your ride. It will undoubtedly make your trip more comfortable and enjoyable. I once drove a U-haul moving truck from Los Angeles to Missouri and we went right through Arizona, New Mexico, and part of Texas on Hwy 40 the whole way. I imagine your trip will not be too far from there. We stopped in petrified forest national park in New Mexico and it was super cool. Do you plan to make any stops along the way?
Reply below and let me know what you think, or if there is anything else I can do to help.
