Can Surge Brake Actuator and Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Both Be Installed On Trailer

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 01/30/2025

Question:

I have a question...I want to put electric over hydraulic brakes on my boat trailer...I would like to keep the surge brake controller in case someone else pulls the boat...is there away to plum that so both systems would work?

Hey Ken! As far as we know there is not a good way to do this. I suppose you could attempt to run some additional lines, add in tees, and add in some kind of valves, but I don't think it would work well (or at all). Also, if a valve failed, you failed to turn the right valves, or someone messed with the valves you're going to have problems you don't want to have. This would be a really bad day if you're out somewhere with your boat. It would be much better to keep it simple and either leave it as is or make the complete conversion to the # HS381-9067.

If you're concerned about others towing the trailer, and that seems like a likely scenario, you could always pick up the Curt Echo # C51180. This brake controller plugs in-line with the 7-way at the rear of the vehicle and is EOH compatible. As long as a vehicle has a 7-way this will work once the app is downloaded and paired. This also completely eliminates the potential problems from trying to leave a functional surge brake actuator on the trailer.

Hey Ken, how did things go with the full conversion to the electric over hydraulic actuator on your boat trailer? Did the setup with the Curt Echo controller work out for you and anyone else towing it? Your update could make it easier for others considering the same change.
