Can A 30 Amp Surge Protector Be Used On A 50 Amp Travel Trailer?
Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/27/2025 >
Question:
Hi , I had a travel trailer that was powered by 30 amps and I had a surge protector for it. I traded that travel trailer for a new one and it is powered by 50 amps. Do I now need to buy a surge protector rated for 50 amps ? Some camp grounds I visit only have 30 amp service. I just want to protect my new 50 amp RV. Thanks !!

Hey welcome back, Jody. So your best option here will be to get a new 50 amp surge protector for your new travel trailer. If you did end up at a camp ground with 50 amp service you would want to have it. I know a lot of sites do have just 30 amp but I would hate for you to end up at a 50 amp site and not have surge protection. Surge protectors should always be matched to the service of the RV. For that reason I recommend getting the following:
- Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth, WiFi, and Emergency Shut Down - 50 Amp # HU62VR
