Question:

What is the best solvent to wash/clean old grease off wheel bearings before repacking? Years go I was taught just to wipe them as clean as possible with a rag so the fresh grease would have the best chance of adhering to the bearings. Also, shouldnt the bearing cone and cup be a matched set? Thanks for the response. Wayne

Hi Wayne; I would use mineral spirits (no particular brand) to completely clean the old grease off of the bearings and then let them air dry. I would still wipe the bearings down first to get as much off as possible and make the process faster/easier. The bearing cone should match with the corresponding race/cup, yes. For example, if you have a # L44649 bearing the correct race is the # L44610.

Hey Wayne, how did things go using the mineral spirits to clean your wheel bearings before repacking? Did the bearings and matching race fit together as expected? Sharing how it turned out could help others working on the same setup.
