Suspension Enhancement for 2024 Ram 2500 Towing Trailer and Excavator

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/27/2024

Question:

Robin, I have a 2024 Ram 2500 and I pull a trailer and excavator. Total weight of 18,000 lbs. Would you recommend the SSR-312-54 for that or do I need something stouter? I am trying not to sacrifice unloaded ride quality.

Hi Randall; since ride quality is a concern I would stay away from the Timbren. However, depending on your tongue weight/pin weight the # SSR-312-54 may be at their limit so as you said a stouter option would be better. The SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs # SS27GR (fits 4WD models only) have a 5,000 lb capacity which would be more than enough. These are the best option if you want something you don't have to maintain.

If you want my overall recommendation it would be the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2598. The air bags also have a 5,000 lb capacity but where they really shine is adjustability. Not only can you set them for whatever you're towing/hauling, you can run them at the minimum 5 psi for zero impact on unloaded ride quality. If you want to adjust them from the cab of your truck wherever you go you will also need an air compressor like the # AL25592.

Hey Randall, how did things turn out with the suspension setup on your Ram 2500? Did the Firestone Ride-Rite air springs give you the balance you wanted between towing support and unloaded ride comfort? Your update could make it easier for others hauling heavy loads to choose the right option.
