Should I Use A Shorter Shank For My Blue Ox Sway Pro Weight Distribution Hitch

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/26/2024

Question:

Hi, I recently purchased the Blue OX Sway Pro BLU66FR for my 2008 GMC Sierra to tow my 2024 Airstream Globetrotter 25 FBT. Im concerned that the 9 hole shank is too long an is only 7 inches above the ground as shown in the attached picture. Is this adequate ground clearance or do I need a shorter 7 hole shank for my application. Thanks, Rob

Hello Rob, thanks for reaching out. 7" of ground clearance is cutting it pretty close but it is not completely out of the ordinary. It might be adequate for you but it really depends on where you will be towing. The low clearance will mainly come into play if/when you are towing over a steep incline. I can't say with certainty if ground clearance will be an issue for you or not. It looks like you are not even using the bottom few holes on your 9-hole shank so if the additional drop is not needed I definitely recommend switching to the 7-hole shank part # BXW4000. This will leave you with about 9" of ground clearance which will leave you with a lot less risk of anything scraping the ground.

Hey Rob, how did things turn out after switching to the 7-hole shank on your Sierra and Airstream setup? Did the extra ground clearance make a noticeable difference when towing? Your update could make it easier for others working through the same concern.
