How to Identify Axle on 2006 Continental JB157-700 Trailer

Published 11/24/2024

Question:

I have a 2006 Continental trailer model JB157-700. I use it to trailer a 16ft Carolina Skiff with a 25 hp outboard. It has a 4 lug pattern and size 4.80-12 tires. I’d like to get a longer axle to make room between the tires and the boat for some wheel wells and also move up a size in tires. Do you have a recommendation for this? Thanks.

Hello Burns; as long as the axle isn't significantly longer this may be possible but you will need to start by identifying what you have now. Specifically the axle capacity and the hub face measurement. I would start by checking the axle tag to see what information is listed. The capacity can typically be found here at a minimum. If you have a serial number the axle manufacturer can find this information for you.

If the length of the axle isn't listed you will have to measure. Take a look at the video below which explains how to measure your axle. Once you get this information you can add it to the comments below and I can see what is available. If you know how much longer you need it to be on each side that would also be helpful.

Hi! There isn’t a sticker on it. It carries a light load. Boat and motor are light. The measurement from hub to hub is 53.5”. I’d like to get an inch or two on each side to put wheel wells.

@Burns a capacity is pretty much a requirement. Try reaching out to Continental Trailers with the VIN number to see if they have any information on it. Also, at 53-1/2" I doubt we have anything even once you get the capacity information so you will probably need to reach out to an axle manufacturer like Dexter.
