Does 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 Need Weight Distribution Hitch for 2024 Sun Lite 16BH

Published 11/13/2024

Question:

Ive got a 2003 Chevy 2500 HD with 1 ton springs and Monroe Overload Shocks and Im going to be pulling a 2024 Sunlite 16bh, The camper has a dry weight of 2490lbs and Ill be putting some equipment chairs, cooler, generator, 14 gal of water mainly in the bed of the truck. I know Im drastically under the tow weight possible of this truck. I know Im going to need a hitch, but I dont know how far of a just yet. I pick up the camper tomorrow, so Ill know more then. My question is...do I need a weight distribution hitch? Is it recommended?

Hi Dave; with most of that in the bed of your truck you probably won't need a weight distribution hitch. If you find that the rear of your truck is sagging when you're hooked up or notice the headlights are pointing upward then it is recommended to keep you level. Since towing the trailer empty without one really isn't a concern I would see how it does when you pick up the trailer and then decide.

If you do decide to get a weight distribution hitch the # RE34FR you were looking at would be appropriate for the trailer with a 200-600 lb tongue weight range. The weight of anything behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle counts as tongue weight so if you're carrying a lot in the truck bed behind the axle you may end up needing a system with a higher rating.

If you find that you have rear sagging from the water, generator, and other things in the truck bed but not from the trailer then I would consider adding air bags like the # AL57275 instead.

I'm taking a 3000lb truck camper out and that only squatted that truck 3 inches, doubtful the camper will squat it at all! "Maybe" I overkilled the suspension a little... Thank you for the information! I will keep a close eye on everything you recommended.
