Recommended Ball Mount for Hauling a Trailer and a Bike Rack

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/12/2024

Question:

Hello, Im wondering what your expert opinion is on using something like this to pull a small cargo trailer and a hitch mounted dirt bike carrier. The trailer would be ~1200lbs with very little tongue weight well balanced load. The dirtbike and carrier would be ~250-300lb. The truck is a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 Part Number: RM-077-2 Thanks!

Hey Graham! I have a solution for you but the Roadmaster Dual Hitch item # RM-077-2 won't work for a trailer. It's for flat towing and hauling an accessory. Instead you'll want to use the Flint Hill Goods Ball Mount item # FHG75VR.

The Flint Hill Goods Ball Mount item # FHG75VR is designed specifically for what you're wanting to do. It fits inside of a 2" receiver, has a gross towing weight of 5,000 lbs and a maximum tongue weight of 500 lbs. This will be perfect for your 1,200 lbs trailer and your dirt bike carrier.

I have linked a review video below so you can see the functions of this ball mount demonstrated.

Depending on your coupler size you will either need a 2" Hitch Ball item # 63845 or a 2-5/16" hitch ball item # 63847.

I also recommend adding the etrailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2" and 2-1/2" Hitches item # e98881. This locking hitch pin will keep your ball mount from walking away while you're parked overnight.

Hey Graham, how did the Flint Hill Goods ball mount work out for towing your cargo trailer and carrying the dirt bike on your Ram 1500? Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar setup.
