Question:
Hi. I have a 1990s Dutchmen Pop-up camper that Id like to add brakes to. The camper has a fixed axle no suspension and does not currently have brakes. Could you advise as to the products I would need to add brakes to this camper. Dry Weight of the camper is 1600-1700 pounds. I will be pulling with a 2011 Rav4 Limited V6. Thanks for your time. Please let me know if you need more information to make a recommendation.

Hey David! The first thing you're going to need is a couple of brake flanges like item # 4-35 to welded to your axle. This is where the brakes attach to and they have to be installed by a professional welder. The item # 4-35 is for 2-3/8" round trailer axles so you'll need to take a measurement to see how thick your axle is because this one might not work for you.
You're also going to need to replace your hubs. In order to find the correct ones you'll have to pull one of the hubs currently on your trailer and look at the part numbers stamped into the two bearings. This will tell me what size spindle you have and then I can go match it up with the correct braking hub. I would also need to know your lug nut pattern so you do not need to replace your wheels. If you could comment with this information below I would be happy to find you the correct hubs and brake flange.
Here are the rest of the parts you will need to add brakes to your 1990s Dutchmen Pop-up camper:
7-Way and Junction Box - etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box item # e99011
Breakaway Kit - Hopkins Engager Trailer Breakaway Kit w/ Charger item # 20400
Brake Wire - Jacketed 2 Wire (Brake Wire) - 12 Gauge - per Foot item # 12-2-1
Brake Assemblies - etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes item # AKEBRK-35
You will also need to add a brake controller to your 2011 Toyota RAV4 if you do not already have one. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that slows or stops your trailer with the same amount of force your RAV4 is slowing down with. It includes all necessary wiring to complete the installation.
