Parts Needed To Convert An EZ Loader Boat Trailer From Surge To Electric Brakes

Question:

I am looking to convert my EZ Loader boat trailer with surge brakes to electric brakes to be controlled by the tow vehicles tow brake controller. Is this something easily done? Then also want to add a load leveling anti sway hitch system. Any recommendations on manufacturer and model? The trailer hauls a Hewescraft SeaRunner 210. Thank you

Hi Cindy,

Are you wanting to transition to electric drum brakes or would you just like to switch to an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) setup that you'd be able to use a brake controller?

If you want to switch to electric drum brakes you'll need to know the axle capacity and bearing/grease seal combination for your spindle. You'll need to switch to electric drum brake assemblies, use hub/drum assemblies, will need a 7-way cable # e99010 and junction box # e99009, breakaway battery and switch # 20400, and will need to run 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 from the junction box back to the brake assemblies. You'd then just need a brake controller and 7-way on the tow vehicle to activate the brakes.

If you want to switch to an EOH setup you would need an actuator # HBA16 (disc brakes) or # HBA-10 (drum brakes), junction box and 7-way cable, and a breakaway battery and switch. You'd also need a brake controller that's compatible with EOH brakes like the Tekonsha P3 # 90195.

To add on a weight distribution hitch you'd first need to install a pole tongue adapter like the # EQ95-01-5950 and would then want to check the fully loaded tongue weight of the trailer to choose the correct weight distribution hitch.

Thank you for the detailed explanation, Kevin. I did not know that there two options of switching to electric drum brakes or utilizing an EOH setup with our trailer's existing disc brakes. It sounds like out truck's integrated trailer brake controller needs to be compatible with EOH brakes or a secondary brake controller needs to be utilized. Or we switch to electric drum brakes which is not preferred. The pole tongue adapter you recommended is perfect as we use an Equal-i-zer weight distribution anti-sway control system on our travel trailer. I'll duplicate that setup for our boat trailer.
