What Aftermarket Brake Controller will Work on a 2020 Silverado 2500 and Dexter Actuator

Published 10/08/2024

Question:

I purchased a 2002 arctic fox that has a dexter actuator in it. My 2020 Chevy 2500hd won’t run the brakes, check trailer brakes keeps coming up. It works for 20 seconds and stops and message comes up on truck display. What controller do I need?

Hey Ryan, sorry to hear about the issues you're having!

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness # TK52HR is the most reliable controller both in general and when it comes to electric-over-hydraulic actuators. You may have to take your 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 to a GM dealer to have the system flashed in order to use this as opposed to your OEM controller, but this will work.

We also have the Adapter Module for BrakeRite # DX35FR and the Dexter BrakeRite SD Adapter # T4845900 which can be installed on their respective systems to make the actuator compatible with your Chevy OEM controller if you'd rather go that route instead.

I called your company and they are sending me a hydrastar hydraulic over electric actuator module. I have an older dexter actuator in the camper. 071-651-00 is the part number. Hopefully this will cure my problem. Let me know your thoughts, thanks.

@RyanR The Hydrastar actuators used to have that problem on older GM trucks, but they've said this shouldn't be a problem on trucks newer than the 2015 model year.
