What To Consider When Upgrading From 4.80-12 To ST175/80R13 Tires

Question:
I want to go from a 12 x 4.80 trailer tire to a 175/80 13 on my 4 kayak trailer. There is clearance inside the fenders for the upgrade. Is there any reason I shouldnt go bigger. I trail long distances and thought a larger diameter tire would be better.

Hello Chris, thanks for reaching out. Fender clearance is the main thing to consider when upgrading tires. Our rule of thumb is you want at least 3" between the fender and the tire, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer. As long as you have enough clearance, you can definitely upgrade.
The only other thing to keep in mind is you don't want to overkill the load rating of the tire by too much. Higher rated tires have a more stiff sidewall, and if the tire is rated too high for the trailer it can lead to a rough ride. Going from a 4.80-12 to a ST175/80R13 this should not be an issue.
