Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace 155/80-13
The tire size you have is not designed for use on a trailer as it's a passenger vehicle tire size. That's actually what the "P" in the tire size references. You want a tire size that starts with ST which means it's for a trailer application. The closest trailer tire size is the size ST185/80-13 which for that I recommend the Westlake part # LHWL101 which is a radial tire with a higher speed rating and a warranty that includes roadside assistance and tire replacement. This tire also has...

  • Increasing Wheel/Tire Size on Carry-On Utility Trailer
You do indeed have a 12 inch rim. When you measure the diameter of the wheel, you'll need to measure the diameter of he wheel where the tire bead meets the wheel. I've provided you a cutaway diagram of a wheel showing where the measurement would be taken. Given the tire size, you have a 12 inch rim. There are a few things you'd need to check before going with the larger 13 inch wheel w/ 175/80-13 tire. The 175/80-13 tire is approximately 3-1/2 inches larger in diameter, which would bring...

  • How to Select Trailer Tires with Correct Load Range Rating for Trailer Gross Weight
Your math is correct in your trailer weight load example. If a fully-loaded tandem axle trailer weighs 4000-lbs then each of the 4 tires will bear 1/4th of that load, or 1000-lbs. In this case a tire rated for 1300-lbs would provide a good safety margin. A tire's rated Load Range means the maximum weight load it can handle (when installed on a suitably-rated wheel) at its full rated PSI pressure. Trailer tires must always be fully-inflated to their maximum rated pressure as noted on their...

Thanks for the photo of your camper. Looks like a nice area. I was able to find the owner's manual for the Aliner trailer. The tires that came on the trailer originally are 4.80 x 12 and the wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt configuration. The tire also has a section width of 4.9 inches. The tires I recommend for your trailer are the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM10062. These are Load Range C tires and have a maximum load rating of 990 lbs at 90 psi. • Replacement Valve Stem For AM30660 Wheel and Tire Combo
Hi Phuc, I can definitely see why that raised a red flag for you, especially with your tires needing 90 PSI. You’re absolutely right to question a valve stem that’s only rated for 65 PSI, because the stem does need to be rated at or above the tire’s required pressure. For your wheel and tire combo part # AM30660 the correct replacement is the Replacement Rubber Snap In Valve Stem rated up to 100 PSI, part # AM93FV. That rating properly supports your 90 PSI tires, so you can replace...

For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, I recommend Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12 inch White Wheel, # AM30620. This is a load range C tire with a 6 ply rating and 990 pound capacity at 90 psi. It comes with a 12 inch white rim. This tire/wheel combo is rated for a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour. You are on the right track. Either the # AM30660 or the # AM30670 would work fine for you. The AM30660 features a white powder coat finish, while the AM30670 has a galvanized finish. It would be up to your individual preference as to which wheel is better for you. The 3.19 pilot diameter refers to the hole in the center of the wheel that the hub grease cap passes through. The section width refers to the distance from the widest point of the outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner...

The load range tire you use will depend on how many axles the trailer has and the size needed. If you are replacing the tires and the wheels then in addition to the size I will need to know the bolt pattern of the wheels. Hey Travis, The next size up would be a 4.80-12 trailer tire/wheel, which would have an overall diameter of roughly 20.7" compared to the 18" - 19" overall diameter of a 5.70-8 wheel/tire. If you have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern you could go with the Kenda # AM30620. If you have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern then you could go with the Kenda # AM30660.

Since you have 4.80-12 tires those must be 12" wheels. I'm sure you measured the overall wheel diameter and not the aactual diameter which is measured between the bead seats. That would explain your 13" measurement. For 4.80-12 tires with a wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern we have the following: -Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30670 -Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range...

You can potentially use new tires and wheels on your trailer as long as there is clearance all around the existing tires for the larger size. You could do the Kenda # AM30660 and safely pull at 65 mph. This is our only option for a pre-mounted tire and wheel combo. I strongly recommend going with a tire with a higher speed rating, but to do this they will not come mounted on the wheel. You would buy them separately and have them mounted at a local shop when they arrive. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30660 that has the 12" white wheel will work just fine for your boat trailer needs. This combination does have the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt hole pattern and comes in a load range C (990 lbs at 90 psi). You can use a tire with a lower weight rating as long as you are not overloading the tire. This is one of the bigger reasons for blowouts. I did some calculations on the tire sizes and found that the difference between the 175/80R13 and the 155/80R13 is pretty small. The 175/80 is 24 inches inches tall whereas the 155/80 is 22.7 inches tall for a difference of 1.3 inches total, but that difference needs to be split since the overall diameter is split since the wheel rotates on the axle. The closest size to that for radial tires are 4.80R12 trailer tires, which are 20.6" in diameter and 4.8" wide. This means you will also need new wheels, but the overall size is important because with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your...

Hub-centric wheels typically use wheel bolts rather than lug nuts to attach to the hub.
