Will Other Brake Assemblies Stop Working If One Brake Assembly Does

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/11/2024

Question:

The grounds for electric brakes were bad on my trailer. I grounded each wheel separately. But, I am wondering if one of the grounds breaks, will you still have brakes to both wheels, only one wheel, or none?

Hey Jim,

If each brake assembly was grounded separately and only one of the grounds is bad then just that one assembly would stop functioning and the rest would still work. In that scenario the other brake assemblies still have power and ground so they'd be good to go.

If you're thinking the other assemblies had both power and ground and still weren't working then I would also check if the brake shoes need to be adjusted if you have manual-adjust brake assemblies. You can use a flat head screw driver or a brake spoon # W80630 to adjust them.

Hey Jim, how did things turn out after you grounded each wheel and checked the brake adjustment? Your results could help others sorting out similar brake issues on their trailers.

@RobinH I made better grounds but the brakes didn't work well. I put in new brake assemblies and the brakes now work great. The internal mechanism was broken on the old brakes.
