Troubleshooting A Short Error Code On A Brake Controller

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/07/2024

Question:

Hello I installed the ETBC7 wiring kit and the 90195 controller in my 2008 Ford Ranger prior to pulling a trailer. I watched the 2008 Ford Ranger install video while installing these and these parts are what they use in the video. I went to pick up a trailer the controller worked perfect for the trip home. I un hooked the trailer when I got home and parked the truck for a bit. A couple weekends later I went to plug the trailer into the truck and all the screen on the controller says is output shorted, no brakes. I have gone over all the connections numerous times now and they are all strong and tight. Is there anything else I need to/ can check? I am getting pretty fed up with seeing that screen, almost to the point where I regret installing this.

Hey Myles,

What brake controller do you have?

Hey Myles, were you able to confirm which brake controller you’re using with your Ranger? Knowing that could help others who run into the same “output shorted” message. Your update might point the next person toward a quicker fix.
