Are The Front And Rear Arms Interchangeable For The Yakima Dr. Tray Bike Rack

Updated 08/26/2024 | Published 08/19/2024

Question:

Hi I have a Yakima Dr Tray 2 bike bumper rack. The ratcheting mechanism has stopped working on my front tray. My local shop and another rack retailer says I need a new arm Yakima model 8889016. But the yakima web site says I need the front tray 8889017. On the website the 8889016 and 8889017 look identical. Will the 8889016 work on my front tray? Thanks

Hey Ted,

The front and rear arms for the Dr. Tray bike rack are unfortunately different so there aren't interchangeable. I actually had someone else looking for this part not too long ago and was told by Yakima that it's discontinued with no stock left so you'd only be able to get a replacement secondhand at this point. I doubt you'll find it secondhand, or that it will be in good condition, so you're realistically looking at replacing the entire rack.

If you do end up looking for a new rack then I recommend the The Benton Shifts&Grins Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # B54FR. The ratcheting arms on this rack allow you to mount to the frame or front wheels for a more versatile fit. It can handle up to 55lbs per bike and tires up to 4" wide. The shank has a second fold to it so it can fold up closer to the platform to take up less space when in storage. There's also a 2-bike add-on # B34FR available if you need to haul more bikes later on. The 2-bike add-on can be removed or reinstalled in just two minutes and is tool free.

Thanks for the info. Do you sell the rack you referenced?

@TedM Yes, you can either click on the # B54FR link to go to the product page or if you scroll down to the 'Products referenced in this question' section on this page you can click on that link as well. Just make sure if you scroll down you're clicking on the bike rack and not the 2-bike add-on; the pictures look so similar it's easy to confuse.
