Can Backup Camera Use Running Light Circuit as Activation Circuit

Updated 08/12/2024 | Published 08/09/2024

Question:

I have a 2017 F350 super duty truck that I put a backup camera on. I want to wire it into my running light circuit but when I start the truck the camera turns off. The only way the camera will work if its wired into the reverse light circuit. Do you sell a converter or a product that will allow me to use my camera on my running light circuit? Regards, Edward

Hey Edward, it's really common for backup cameras to use the running light circuit as the activation circuit instead of the reverse light so I am wondering if maybe there was something wrong with the circuit or the connection you made. You shouldn't need a converter at all.

Hi Jameson, thanks for the quick reply. I wired the backup camera to the running light circuit. With the key switch turned to on position the camera works. As soon as I start the truck the camera shuts off? I'll double check my wiring to make sure I hooked into the right circuit. I thought I might need something like a focus I had, to connect a trailer, I needed a converter for It... Thanks again for your help! Edward

Hello again Jameson, I talked to the manufacturer and it seems my issue is a dirty power one when you start the vehicle and it runs using the alternator. So you can buy a little capacitor/rectifier setup on Amazon for about $6 and that should take care of the situation. Maybe you can add that to your website's products?! Thanks again! Edward

@Edward That's interesting and I appreciate the follow up info on that. What brand camera was it that you have?
