Should I Replace A Damaged Hub On A 1996 Heritage Dual Axle Boat Trailer?

Updated 08/12/2024 | Published 08/08/2024

Question:

My 1996 heritage dual axel boat trailer just blew out the bearings While repairing and replacing everything I noticed there’s a little chip in the rear hub and the wheel seal goes in snug but when I pulled the drum back off the seal stayed on the spindle. I put it back on the hub and it is still snug but not tight Can I run it like that?

Hey thanks for reaching out, Chris. It sounds like your hub does need to be replaced. You may be able to run with it in this condition temporarily, but if there is visible damage to the hub, my concern is that the seal is not going to be fully flush. This could cause grease to leak out of the hub, or the grease may just get dirty and decrease the life of your hubs and bearings. Because of this I have to recommend that you replace it. If you can tell me your inner and outer bearing numbers, your seal size and your hub bolt pattern I am happy to look into it and see if we have a replacement for you.

@ChrisC That national seal 473317 is not very common anymore and it is a bit of an oddball size. I recommend using the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K hub. You will also need the Double Lip Seal part # 168255TB as this will fit the hub and have the correct ID for your spindle.
