Can I Put Larger Tires On My Cargo Trailer Without Having To Modify Anything?

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/07/2024

Question:

I have a 7x16 enclosed cargo trailer. Tire and wheel size is ST205/75R15 load range C. I want to have a larger tire to lift the trailer since I am using a Cargo Van that has suspension lift. I also want to know what are my options for a “D” or even “E” ply all terrain tire on my current wheel. I want to increase the load capacity and equip it for my needs as well a give it a lift to help balance the height difference from my van. What is the largest tire size I can go with for my trailer without making any modifications to the axles or wheel hub? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for reaching out, Rudy. It may be possible to put larger tires on your cargo trailer. The main thing to consider here is the clearance. Our rule of thumb is that you want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the inside of the tire and the frame of the trailer.

The typical ST205/75R15 trailer tire like the Kenda # AM10245 is 8.1" wide and 27.3" in diameter.

If we go to the next size up, the ST225/75R15 like the Kenda # AM10303, they are 8.9" wide and 28.4" in diameter.

Looking at your pictures, it looks like you might have room to go with bigger tires, but I suggest you measure to be sure. As long as you have room, I suggest going with the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10303. These are load range E so 10 ply rated with a 2,830 lb max load at 80 PSI. This is realistically the largest tire you could do without having to modify anything.

If you find there is no room to go with a bigger size, we do have a load range D 205/75-15 # AM10245 which will at least be an upgrade from your current C range tires.

Hey Rudy, how did things turn out with the larger tires for your cargo trailer? Did the ST225/75R15s give you the lift and load capacity you were hoping for? Your update could make it easier for others trying to match their trailer height to a lifted van.
