Troubleshooting Tire with Weird Bounce on Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer

Updated 08/02/2024 | Published 07/30/2024

Question:

I’m replacing the tires and tubes on my Yakima rack and roll trailer. Do I need to get the tires balance? One of the wheels had a minor bounce and causes a strange wear pattern on one section of the tire. Do you have any ideas on what caused the bounce?

Hey Peter, thanks for reaching out!

The tires on your Yakima Rack and Roll trailer won't need to get balanced, although if you wanted to have a trailer shop do so there wouldn't be any harm in it.

In addition to getting the replacement Tire # Y8880282 and Inner Tube # Y8880283, I'm wondering if one of the bearings is bad and causing the hub to make the tire bounce like that.

Try using your spare tire, and if you don't have a spare tire swap the one that you know has been performing well to the side that had the bounce and see if the bounce still exists. If it does, then I recommend getting into the hub to see if something is going on with the bearings. To replace them you'll need to get two 6302-2RS bearings (sourced locally).

Let me know if you're still having issues and I can help you troubleshoot further.

The same thing happened on the spare. It is specific to the left side. Is there anything else it could be?

@PeterT I reached out to my contact at Yakima to see if they have encountered anything like this before and they said they haven't, and that getting the tire balanced and checking on the bearing to see if it's still in good shape.

@JonG Is there a secret to getting the wheel bearings out?

@PeterT You should just have to remove the wheel and hub and the bearings will come off with the hub.
