Truck And Trailer Are Porpoising - Is This Because My Spring Bars Are Under-Rated?

Question:

Tow with 01 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3. Trailer 2018 irest river vibe 251rks extreme lite. Approx 5500 dry weight. I bought blue ox weight distrubition hitch. Trailer and truck is propipoising. Will a away bar too light cause this if so can i upgrade to heavier bars.

Hello Earl. The porpoising you mentioned is rare when using a weight distribution hitch, but if the bars are under-rated it could cause this kind of issue. I am not sure which Blue Ox system you are using currently, but if you have the Blue Ox TrackPro hitch, I recommend using the 800 lb Spring Bars # BLU25FR.

If you have a different Blue Ox system, just let me know what you have and I am happy to make a recommendation.

Porpoising is generally the caused when you do not have enough tongue weight relative to the gross weight of the trailer (ideally between 10% and 15%). A weight distribution hitch will typically fix this, but you can also try rearranging things inside the trailer to try to increase the tongue weight.
