Recommended Wireless Brake Controller for a 2021 Volvo XC90

Updated 07/08/2024 | Published 05/30/2024

Question:

Hi, I have a 2021 Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge hybrid. It has a tow weight rating of 5000lbs and a hitch weight rating of 500lbs. It has the factory hitch and towing software package installed. I am getting a new larger trailer that has electronic brakes. I would like to get a wireless brake controller and electronic sway control unit. Can you recommend a combination that will be compatible with my vehicle and with one another? I have heard good things about the Tuson sway control but because Volvo is a Swedish car Im not sure if the Tuson unit is compatible with my cars Trailer Stability Assist software.

Jess, so yeah the Tuscon # 335TSC-1000 would work but it's going to require quite a bit of wiring so when you go to switch trailers you're going to need to do a lot to transfer the unit.

I'd instead recommend going with the Curt Echo # C51180 which is 100% wireless. This brake controller just plugs into your 7-way and works in conjunction with the app to provide your trailer with brakes. This would require no wiring, and can easily be moved from vehicle to vehicle.

Thank you. What would you recommend for sway control?

@Jessica I'd recommend using a weight distribution hitch with sway control like the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW1006. A weight distribution system is designed to deal with sway, so adding something like that would definitely help.

@BryceD the Volvo XC90 is a unibody and has self-leveling suspension. It is not approved for a weight distribution hitch. I am looking for both wireless brake control and an electronic sway control unit that is compatible with the 2021 Volvo XC90.

@Jess Got it, so for the wireless brake controller you can still use the Curt Echo mentioned above, but for an electronic sway control unit I recommend going with the Curt True Corse # C94VV. This unit prevents trailer sway by activating brakes independently of the driver and brake controller, pairs with the Curt Echo, and has an easy plug in install.
