Should There Be A Gap Between The Axle And A SumoSpring Jounce Bumper
Updated 05/28/2024 | Published 05/26/2024 >
Question:
Should the SumoSpring contact the top of the axle when no addition weight is on the rear. I have a 5 1/2inch gap with the old bumper in, the SumoSpring is 5. Should I put in the 1inch spacer?

Hey Jeff,
SumoSprings do not need to be touching the axle when unloaded. Having a bit of a gap while unloaded is totally normal. Giving your axle a bit of wiggle room before engaging the jounce spring will give you a bit more of a comfortable ride. As you hit bumps in the road the springs will contact the axle and will have a softer progression instead of feeling like you're hitting a boulder in the road because their too close and already compressing.
I have the 1,500lb SumoSprings on my Silverado and have about an inch gap but haven't felt anything negative since installing them. I did notice that it immediately stiffened up the ride so that I'm not sliding side to side while making turns. With yours going on a top-heavy motorhome you should see an immediate difference to the constant wobbling it most likely has while driving around.
