Question:

Good day. I have a 2008 Glendale Titanium with Dexter hydraulic brakes. I have installed a P3 controller in my 2007 silverado 2500 with factory harnes. The issue is the hydrolic brakes are all or nothing. When they engage the pump spooles up just like the breakaway is pulled. I cannot get any slow breaking from the trailer. Controller is set to hydrolic, gain is set low and when I bring it up the pump spooles up and skids the tires. Ive dont the dexter test of the pump and it operates as they say it should. I have never pulled a trailer with this type of breaking. Does the pump put psi as needed to the disk breaks? Does the P3 tell it how much psi to create? Thanks in advance. Maurice

Hey Maurice,

The first thing I want to confirm is that you have disc brakes and not drum brakes? The Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator # K71-651 is designed for disc brakes and would send out 1,600psi instead of just 1,000psi that drum brakes would need. If you have drum brakes then you would need the # K71-650 instead.

The Tekonsha P3 only sends out voltage to the actuator so it's likely not the issue as long as you have the settings correct for electric-over-hydraulic brakes, but the wiring running from the 7-way to the actuator could potentially be damaged. I would check the voltage with a multimeter # PT89ZR at the 7-way to see how much voltage is going to the actuator so we can see where the voltage starts dropping and the work your way up to the actuator. Let me know what you find and we can keep troubleshooting.

Thank Kevin Yes it has disk brakes, wireing all good. The actuator was bad, proportioning vale inside is bad. No repair, replace. Cheers.
