Can Yakima OnRamp be Used in Hitch of Flat Towed Vehicle

Updated 05/08/2024 | Published 05/05/2024

Question:

We have a 23 GMC Canyon Denali, Im looking at the Yakama On-Ramp to carry our Specialized e-bikes aprox 60 lbs each. The Canyon will be flat towed behind a class A motorhome. I see the original On-ramp was rated for flat towing, I dont see the info for the new one. We are in our 60s and the bikes dont fit in the bed of the truck, also dont want to have to lift them so our options for carrying them are extremely limited... also, the video demod a minivan and didnt show the tilt away feature, would it clear the tailgate? My hitch is 8inch below the tailgate when open tailgate extends ~17 I had been drooling over the Hollywod Destinations rack but saw it was not rated for flat towing : Any other recommendations also would be helpful. THANKS

Hey Patti, yes the Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack part # Y88DJ is compatible with vehicles that are being flat towed so it would work well for you. The ramp built into this will make loading the bikes quite a bit easier as well.

Trying to decide now if the upgrades from the original is worth $400 difference? I saw complaints about how the ramp was not wide enough, or 2 bikes could not be loaded front/back making it difficult for the post to lock in. I have a step thru so my connection point is also limited. I tried using your comparison tool and it didn't provide me with any side by side comparison or measurement differences. Reading the specs both are identical in the description.

@PattiR So the part # Y36FR is a lot cheaper at this time ONLY because we have a couple used versions of the rack somehow. It's normally a lot more expensive comparable to the newer version and once the used ones are gone the older version won't be online anymore.
