Does Hitch Ball Angle Need Adjusting For Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution

Question:

I have a question on proper hitch ball angle. I recently went from a 1500 to a 2500 truck and had to adjust the hitch for more drop but i have a question on hitch ball angle. Can you explain how to adjust to the proper angle for a weight distribution hitch. I have read that the ball should be angled back towards trailer.

Hi Joe,

I assume you are referencing an Equal-i-zer weight distribution since you have shank # EQ90-02-4700. I went ahead and read the owners manual for their systems and there is noting regarding adjusting the angle of the hitch ball. The hitch head will get a different amount of spacer washers depending on the tongue weight, but that is something you have to see during set-up; it will be either 4, 5 (which is most likely), or 6. Then when setting up the ball on the shank, the directions state "tighten the angle set bolt until it comes into contact with the shank and lifts the head to where the spacer rivet also comes into solid contact with the shank. Tighten the angle set bolt an additional 1/2 turn. The hitch head should be angled down slightly."

I have a reese weight distribution hitch. I recently purchased an equalizer shank because i needed to go from 2” to 2.5”. My hitch ball is adjustable with bolts and teeth in the sides of the hitch system. I have read that having tilt back keeps the bars engaged more when traveling and turns. Just curious thanks.
