Recommended Roof Vent For An Enclosed Trailer With A 1/4" Thick Roof

Updated 03/18/2024 | Published 03/17/2024

Question:

I have an enclosed cargo trailer with a galvanized roof. In total it’s 1/4 thick. I need a roof vent for it, but not 14x14 and 2 inch thick. Do I have any options?

Hey Jesse,

The square vents we offer all require a 14" x 14" opening in order to be installed. You can always add in some wood to increase the thickness of the roof but the hole size is going to be something that has to be right. With it being an enclosed trailer you can easily cut the roof to make the correct size hole. The lift arms on vents like the # V2110SP-24 you were looking at are weak and break often so I recommend going with the MaxxFan Mini Plus Manual RV Roof Vent w/ 12V Fan # MA00-03801 (black # MA00-03851).

This vent comes with a rain shield lid so that you can use the vent/fan during inclement weather and also while driving around. The other style vents have to be closed while on the move because the lift arms can't handle the wind resistance so your trailer won't be able to vent out hot air while you're driving around. This also has a built in LED light to help out when it gets dark. The MaxxFan Mini Plus can fit roof thicknesses 1" to 4-1/2" thick so you'd likely just need to pick out 1" x 2" x 6' board to cut down and make into a frame to go around the cutout hole and get the thickness right.

You'll also need butyl tape # AL28FJ and a couple tubes of self-leveling sealant # 34427034145-1 for a waterproof seal to the roof.
