Question:
I have what appear to be Dexter 7000 lb axles on my horse trailer. I was looking at these shoes to replace the ones I have. Replacement Shoe Kit for Dexter 12 x 2 Manual Adjust Electric Brake Assembly - 7K. Do all Dexter 8 lug axles have the same shoes and are they these? Thank You

Expert Reply:
Before you buy new brake shoes you will want to identify your axles or at least measure your drums. 7k axles could have a hub and drum with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern but so do larger axles. Check your axle tag to see if the capacity is listed or if there is a serial number. Dexter can identify it with the serial number. If you measure and find that you have 12" x 2" drums then these will fit.
You also need to make sure you have manual brakes and not self-adjusting. The # DX28FR is designed for manual brakes. If you have the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust then you need # K71-676 for the right and # K71-675 for the left. If you aren't sure, check the adjuster and see if there is a spring coiled around it. If you have that spring on the adjuster then you have self-adjusting brakes.
