That's a good question, and there's an interesting reason why there are the long holes on the side of the etrailer Magnetic Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" Hitch # e28JR.

Using a regular reducer sleeve requires you to line up your hitch pin with two holes - the standard hitch pin hole and the reducer sleeve hole. Getting both holes lined up in juuuuuuuuuuuuust the right spot is pretty frustrating (especially if it's something you are taking on and off frequently, and these long holes eliminate that frustration.

With the # e28JR, instead of getting down on the ground and trying to eyeball the perfect alignment you can just slide the reducer in and use your accessory as usual.
