Question:
I am hoping for some help/recommendations. I have a 2019 Grand Design Reflection 28BH with two 5200# axels. We are looking to upgrade the weight of the axel without changing tires if possible. We currently have a 6 lug dexter brake system. Can you put a list together of your 6000# axel, leaf springs, and any ancillary hardware you would recommend or that i will need to do this myself? I am relatively handy with automotive repairs but have not tackled this before. I am assuming getting the axel with new brake drum is easier/better?

Thankfully, Grand Design actually has some parts info we can reference, unlike any other manufacturer, so I know that your 2019 Grand Design Reflection 28BH does have 5,200 lb axles that measure 86-1/2" hub face to hub face and 68-1/2" spring center to spring center. We have an option to replace that with a 6,000 lb axle, but the spring centers will be different on the axle we offer so you'll have to have new ones welded on 68-1/2". So what you will need is the following:
- Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 86-1/2" - 6K # 8327826-EB
- (Two of these): Spring Seat for Typical 5,200-lb to 7,200-lb, Round Trailer Axle # TRSS300
This axle comes with a 6k hub with the same bolt pattern as your hub so you can keep your tires, so you just need the different spring seats put on and you're set. You don't need any special hardware, and while you can reuse the U-bolts you have, I would go ahead and replace them while you're at it with U-Bolt Axle Mounting Hardware Kit # LC27XV.
As for the leaf springs, that's the part GD did not have any info on, so you just need to measure your current leaf springs from center-to-center of the spring eyes. Leaf springs flatten a bit over time, so you should go with ones that measure a bit shorter than what you currently have. For example, if they measured 25-7/8" go with Leaf Springs # e94SR.
I have added a link below to our selection of leaf springs for you once you find that info.
