Can a Load Range D Tire be Used on the Same Wheel as a Load Range C Tire

Updated 03/24/2014 | Published 03/20/2014

Question:

I understand that I can use the same size tire with either the load range C or D, but that does not allow me to carry more weight than the axles. Can I use the load range D trailer tire on the same rim/wheel even though the rim/wheel is stamped 1820#s load range C, but still not go over my axle weights or gvwr. In other words, does a load range D pressured at the 65 psi afford me a greater safety margin than the load range C at 50 psi, assuming I stay within the axle and gvwr parameters and I dont dare bring up the Made in China subject-unless you want to comment on it. Thanks and enjoy this site very much-have used it frequently 2014 Dutchman Kodiak 2 3500# axles- GVWR 7600#-hitch weight 695#

Yes, you can use load range D tires on the same wheel as a load range C tire as long as the tire sizes are the same. Even with the load range D tires, you should still not exceed the weight capacity of the axle.

You mentioned that your trailer has 3,500 lb axles and your wheels are stamped with a weight capacity of 1,820 lbs. Since two wheels would exceed the weight capacity of the axle, you will want to use the axle capacity as the limiting factor as long as the new tires are rated higher than the axle.

Again, assuming the new tires meet or exceed the axle capacity and assuming you remain within the axle capacity, there is no problem going with a higher load range tire. This will give you a greater safety margin and, as a side note, you may notice a slightly stiffer ride with the new tires
