Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes That Are Locking Up

Updated 06/20/2023 | Published 06/17/2023

Question:

Hello, the left front brake on a tandem axle is locking up when they brakes are applied. I have adjusted the adjustment knob out and the wheel spins freely but is still locking up. Should I start over and adjust the knob until the wheel won’t split n and then adjust the brakes back out?

There are a couple more things you can check first before anything else. Since you've already adjusted the brakes via the adjustment knob we can rule out that the brakes are out of adjustment.

The next possible reason why could be your wiring having a short. What you'll want to do is comb through your wiring on your trailer and inspect it for any brakes, frays, or damage. Also, check that your ground connections on your trailer as well as your brake assemblies and ensure they are to a clean surface.

If there are wires that are damaged, you'll want to replace them as you see fit and check again for functionality.

If you're still having issues then you'll need to remove the hub and check the brake magnets for wear. If you can see windings or wear marks on the magnet they're going to need to be replaced.
