Can a Trailer Hitch Receiver Be Welded Onto Impact Structure Behind Rear Bumper For 2017 Chevy Volt?

Question:
2016-19 Chevy Volt. Can a receiver be mounted to the bumper and extend out behind the license plate? This seems stronger and simpler than the small square tubes used in the Curt and Draw Tite models and a lot cheaper than the Ecohitch. It would only entail drilling mounting holes in the bumper and cutting the facia behind the license plate. The receiver would be welded to a piece of flat plate and the plate bolted to the bumper.

The impact structure behind the rear bumper fascia of your 2017 Chevrolet Volt is not structurally strong enough to support a receiver. This is why instead of replacing the impact structure the available Curt # C11436, Draw-Tite # 24947 and EcoHitch # 306-X7338 mount behind the structure. The impact structure is also designed to help absorb impact in a collision while the receiver is designed to support the weight when towing or carrying additional weight. I do feel the EcoHitch is the best looking with it hiding behind the license plate.
I recommend installing the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118726 when you install the receiver. This will give you a 4-way flat wiring connector which will control the lights on most small trailers and Auxiliary Lights # C53201. The auxiliary lights are needed when you have a hitch mounted accessory which impairs the view of the tail lights on your Volt.
