Troubleshooting Intermittent Electric Brake Connection

Question:

Im using a brand new 2013 Dodge Ram truck with factory installed tow package with integrated break controller. Im towing a 2005 Holiday Rambler 5th wheel with a goose neck hitch. All works well for the most part, however when I excellarate from a stop I often get a warning message that my trailer breaks are not connected. When I slow down the connection is restored. This only happens during exceleration. The 7 pin connector is wired correctly and has a neutral or ground connection so the ground isnt through the goose neck. I have enough cable on the hook up so that when I excellorate it isnt pulling on the connector and the connector is a good tight fit, however it is the original 7 pin connector on the trailer side of the connection. What things should I check?

It sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere since the issue only happens when you accelerate. The first step I would take would be to inspect the grounds on the trailer. Check the ground for the trailer connector and the grounds for the brake magnets. Make sure they are free of corrosion and secured to a clean bare surface on the trailer frame.

If the trailer has a poor ground connection, then it may try to ground through the trailer ball, which could explain why the connection is intermittent.

I would also inspect the trailer connectors on the truck and trailer. Look for any signs of white or green corrosion. If you see any signs of corrosion, it is possible that the corrosion may have worked its way inside the trailer connector. Take the trailer connectors apart and inspect the wires for corrosion or a loose connection.
