I recommend changing the hitch ball out every 3 years. Hitch balls are really inexpensive. Rust normally gets into the tread and nut, and under the base of the ball flange. When the hitch ball is not in use you should use a tow ball cover. When the hitch ball is being used make sure the ball is greased. Without lubrication, the hitch ball will wear out prematurely.
If you're needing a replacement hitch ball the 2 inch Hitch Ball # A-90 or the 2-5/16 inch hitch ball # 19286 would be a great replacement.
