Why Would Gas Be Coming Out of Long Disconnected Propane Hose

Question:
I have a 5th wheel with two 20-lb tanks. I am staying in cold weather. I have an external 100-lb tank. I disconnected the 100-lb tank to fill it and reconnected a 20 pounder. No leaks last night. This morning it was completely drained with gas coming out of the longer hose that was no longer attached to that bigger tank. What happened in the regulator that allowed gas to escape thru that longer hose? The valve was turned to only allow gas flow from the attached smaller tank. Also prior to this, our furnace would initially kick on but would not kick back on by itself. We replaced our thermostat and thought that low pressure in the fuel tank might cause it.

It sounds like you have a bad regulator. These do have a lifespan of about 5 - 10 years so if yours is in that age range it isn't as surprising that it would give out like that. If you had the regulator switched to your 20-lb tank and it switched over to the open-ended hose then that's why I believe the regulator is bad.
There are 2 options I recommend choosing from to replace your regulator; the JR Products Automatic Changeover 2-Stage Propane Regulator # 37207-30395 or the GasStop Emergency Propane Shut-Off Gauges w 18" Hoses and Automatic Changeover Regulator # GS69FR.
The JR Products regulator is essentially just a basic replacement for what you already have while the GasStop setup is an overhaul and an upgrade as it comes with new 18" hoses and the emergency propane shutoff. The GasStop system not only stops leaks from happening but it also has a test feature where you can check for small leaks.
Attached is a review video of the JR Products regulator as well as the GasStop Valve Gauge # GS24FR that's part of the kit I mentioned above.
