Question:

Hello- I recently purchased a 2022 4Runner trail edition that comes with the yakima load warrior basket. Trying to find mounts for awning that will work with the basket. I would like to side mount awning rather than on top of the basket. not sure which awning to go with so are the mounts universal? Thank you!

An awning like the Yakima SlimShady # Y36VR can be mounted directly on your LoadWarrior. However, there are no brackets that will allow you to mount it on the side. Brackets like the # Y84AR you were looking at are designed to fit in T-slots so they will not work with the roof basket. Also, your factory crossbars do not have enough space to attach the awning next to the roof basket.

The SlimShady is the best option since it can clamp onto the LoadWarrior like it would your crossbars. See the attached image. The SlimShady comes in the following sizes:

-4-1/2' Long x 6-1/2' Wide # Y56VR

-6-1/2' Long x 6-1/2' Wide # Y36VR

-8' Long x 8' Wide # Y96VR

The other option you have is to replace the factory crossbars with longer crossbars. This would allow you to attach the SlimShady or another style of awning on the additional crossbar space next to your roof basket. If you used the Rhino Rack Roof Rack # RR82QE you would have the additional space needed to mount an awning on the side.

This would also give you the option to use a more encompassing awning like the Rhino-Rack Batwing Awning # RR33100 (Driver's Side) or # RR33200 (Passenger's Side). This has extensions available as well # RR31101 if you want to cover more area or add sidewalls.
