Best Electric Boat Trailer Winch and How to Determine Capacity

Updated 06/21/2022 | Published 06/18/2022

Question:

Have a 22’ pontoon with a dry weight of 1967 lb. And a motor of 250 lb. Pontoon is on a 24’ bunk trailer with plastic slides instead of carpet. How do we figure out which size and weight of electric winch we will need? We always trailer the pontoon and launch on a variety of public accesses.

I would be happy to help you! When it comes to choosing an electric winch or any winch for a boat trailer, there are a few general rules we can use. The boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, the ration can increase to 3 to 1 and with wooden bunks and long winching distances, you will want to reduce the capacity to 1 to 1. Since you have plastic sides instead of carpet you will probably be in the 2 to 1 range. I recommend the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Trailer Winch - Marine - 1,500 lbs item # TW4015. This winch has the capacity to handle up to a 4,000 lbs boat so it will be perfect for your 22' poontoon boat and you can leave your cargo in it while loading it onto the trailer. This winch includes a 20' long strap with a zinc-plated steel hook that will accommodate the varying style public accesses you use.
