Can I Use a 235/85-R16 Tire Instead of a 235/80-R16 Tire on My Fifth Wheel Trailer?

Published 05/12/2022

Question:

Hi, considering fifth wheel tires. Current fifth wheel: 2 Axle 15700 GVWR 12000 Dry Weight 2300 Hitch pin weight Currently spec from the Northwood Trailer factory with ST 235 80R16 E Rated Endurance tires. Considering 23585R16 G rated. Cam you let me know your thoughts if I’d likely be ok staying with the E rated, or better advised to go with a G rated tire? Been pulling this trailer over 4 years with no issues. Thank you

First, let's consider the tire size. As far as using a 235/85-R16 tire instead of a 235/80-R16 tire size, both of these tires use practically the same rim width. That won't be an issue. The only thing to be aware of that may cause a different fitment than your current setup is that the 235/85-R16 has a 31.7 inch diameter instead of the smaller 30.8 inch diameter on the 235/80-R16 tire. This difference is important in order to consider the compatibility with your current fenders. With that being said, I recommend measuring the clearance between your current tires and your fenders to make sure that you have enough fender clearance for slightly larger tires.

As far as the load range, you will be able to safely use a load range G tire like the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16. Load range G tires can generally hold more air in the tire, has a higher weight capacity, and has greater durability than range E tires. Range G tires also have a higher ply rating for these reasons. The # TTWPRG235R16 have a dual-tire weight rating of 3,860 lbs at 110 psi and a single-tire weight rating of 4,400 lbs at 110 psi.

All that being said, if your E range tires provide the capacity and the durability you need, you will be OK. However, if you want extra durability and capacity, I recommend going with the # TTWPRG235R16. We currently do not carry any range E tires in size 235/85-R16.
