Troubleshooting Draw Down Bolt Seizing on B&W Companion

Updated 07/24/2026 | Published 03/18/2022

Question:

i had an issue with the draw down bolt seizing and having to cut the bolt head to remove and replace the drawn down bolt. The Companion hitch is stored inside when not in use. I was told not to use anti seize on the bolt. Have you had any experience with this. I dont want to have to go and do the removal process again. I had to replace the drawn down bolt and hardware. There was no contamination and it was very clean. Can you advise me. Thank you.

I reached out to B&W to double check and found that you do not want to use anti seize on that draw down bolt because it throws off the torque when trying to torque the bolt down. The bolt shouldn't seize unless the Companion # BWRVK3400 is left out in the elements when not in use. If it does happen again, you can reach out to B&W and they will send a replacement bolt and socket.

B&Ws explanation about the draw down bolt seizing because it is left out in the weather is not entirely true. I have had at least 4 draw down bolts and two u Clamp nuts seize. Have had to cut the bolts and nuts off. I have owned the hitch for 15 years and have never had the hitch or truck left out in the weather. The truck and hitch have been garaged the entire time unless camping. Love the hitch and B&W have supplied me with replacement hardware free of charge. Still a pain when trying to remove the hitch and bolts and nuts seize.
