Can a Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2013 Ford Edge that Already has a Factory Trailer Hitch
Published 08/01/2013 >
Question:
We have been looking at a small travel trailer that falls under the 3500# tow limit of our 2013 Ford Edge, however it exceeds the 350# tongue weight on the factory installed class II rec. Can this aftermarket receiver be used? It looks like the factory unit is welded permanently to the crossbar on the body and would not be easy to be removed.

If the factory hitch is welded on then you will not be able to install an aftermarket hitch on your 2013 Ford Edge. Removing it could weaken the vehicle frame and/or bumper structure and if it is welded on it is likely serving a dual purpose: hitch and bumper.
If it is bolted on it would just have to be unbolted and removed to install a Class III hitch like # 75728 that you have referenced.
For tongue weight capacity, even if a hitch is rated for 525 pounds tongue weight, that does not mean the vehicle is. You will need to check the owners manual for the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle.
To lower the tongue weight of a trailer you can move some of the weight further back in the trailer (if possible). I have included a link to an FAQ article on determining tongue weight.
