What Parts Are Needed to Add Electric Drum Brakes to a Trailer

Question:

I Have a Performance brand trailer ,made in Texas with twin 3500 lb axles. I was wanting to add trailer brakes and wanted to know if I need or have to do both axles or just one axle? I will be using the trailer on occasion to haul a small tractor that weighs about 2600 lbs. I have controller already that I use on fifth wheel. I can not remember bolt pattern .

You can put brakes just on one axle and save some money, many trailers are set up this way. But for the best braking performance and to decrease the amount of wear on just one set on one axle, the best bet is to get brakes on both axles.

The first thing you are going to want to do is look at the axles to see if there are brake mounting flanges welded to the axle. If there is just a spindle that goes directly to the axle then there are no mounting flanges and you will need to have some added. This is a precision job that requires a qualified professional with experience welding on brake mounting flanges. I have included a link to our brake mounting flanges so you know what to look for.

You will also need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers. To get them you will need to pull off a hub and take out the bearings. This is something you are going to have to do anyway so might as well get a head start! The bearing numbers will be stamped into the metal of the bearings. With those numbers I can determine the correct hub and drum assemblies. I have linked a video that will help.
