Question:
Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller - 2 Braking Modes - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional. Will this product plug directly into my 2017 Volvo XC90 under the dash? Will it adapt?

Expert Reply:
Your 2017 Volvo XC90 does not have an in-cab plug-in brake controller option, including the Redarc # RED44FR. The issue is that there isn't an adapter made, and hardwiring is also a problem due to the fact there isn't a reachable stoplight switch wire (the wire that gets power when you step on the brake pedal) on your vehicle.
There is one simple to use option, which is from Curt:
- Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180
The Echo # C51180 will simply plug into the 7-way if you have a factory tow package on your XC90 with a working 7-way, or you can add one with a couple parts:
- T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118683
- 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L
This will give you a working 7-way for your Volvo, and the # ETBC7L doesn't require the same wiring as a traditional 7-way because the Echo doesn't use the stoplight switch, it only needs +12V, ground and turn signals connected to
the 7-way. So it is really the only option I recommend for adding a brake controller to your Volvo XC90.
